Many manufacturers add a similar voluntary warning for maltitol.
The Cardiovascular Research You Need to Know About
This is the most important update in the sugar alcohol conversation in the last three years, and it is genuinely new information that most guides on this topic have not caught up to yet.
In 2023, a Cleveland Clinic team led by Dr Stanley Hazen published research in Nature Medicine identifying an association between elevated blood erythritol levels and increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, including a mechanism showing erythritol made platelets more prone to clotting in a clinical intervention study.
In 2024, the same research team published a follow-up study in the European Heart Journal with very similar findings for xylitol. The study combined a large-scale patient analysis of more than 3,000 adults across the US and Europe, preclinical lab models, and a clinical trial in which participants drank a xylitol-sweetened beverage. Researchers measured a clear, immediate increase in clot-forming platelet activity following xylitol consumption that did not occur after a comparable glucose drink.
