The maths depends on the polyol. Maltitol carries a GI of up to 52, so count its grams in full rather than subtracting them the way you would erythritol. Erythritol, with a GI of 0, is the only sugar alcohol usually deducted in full on a ketogenic diet.
What is the healthiest sugar alcohol?
There is no single winner. Erythritol scores lowest for GI and digestive load, xylitol is the most studied in dental research, and maltitol is the closest to sugar in taste and texture, which is why it leads in chocolate. Pick by what you are optimising for, and note the 2023 and 2024 cardiovascular research if you have existing heart disease.
Is sugar alcohol the same thing as sugar?
No. Sugar alcohols are chemically related to sugar but are only partially absorbed by the body, which gives them fewer calories and a lower blood sugar impact than sucrose. They taste sweet because they activate the same taste receptors, but they're processed very differently once swallowed.
Why do some sugar-free products carry a laxative warning?
Because high amounts of sorbitol, mannitol, or maltitol are osmotically active in the colon. The FDA requires this warning when sorbitol or mannitol content is significant, and many manufacturers add a similar voluntary note for maltitol. For maltitol specifically, the threshold where this effect typically begins is around 40-50 grams in a single sitting for most adults.
Are sugar alcohols suitable for children?
Yes, in age-appropriate amounts. Children can enjoy sugar-alcohol-sweetened treats, though their comfortable tolerance is roughly half that of an adult. Erythritol carries the lowest digestive risk, while maltitol, sorbitol, or large amounts of xylitol should be kept modest, generally under 10-15 grams per day from all sources combined.
